 Curriculum Repository Glossary

Abstract Express important points of the documented content as concept(s) apart from itself. Do not refer to any part of the content, or speak of results, conclusions or recommendations, yet summarize the content without using examples. State it so a new reader of the content will understand the nature of the content without having any practical understanding of the content, as in relating the content to theory. Use less than 100 words, and stand alone paragraph(s) including an introductory, body and finish structure to the wording. Follow the chronology of the related content. Do not add recommendations or thoughts.
Administrative Dump Text direct from the content, pasted into form, to enable better simple search and retrieval.
Announcement Notifications or declarations by an individual or organization.
Anonymous Work Content compiled for distribution and use, where no person is identified as the author or owner.
Application A computer program designed for a specific, or related sets of tasks.
Article A distinct portion of a nonfiction writing or body-of-knowledge which forms an independent (unbound) segment for the purpose of highlighting the subject area/sub-area.
Assignment Lessons, labs, or projects or other course deliverable that can be assigned to the learners to complete on their own, without instructional assistance.
Author The originator or creator of the original piece of content submitted to the repository with authority to dedicate the content to the repository for the purpose of sharing as described in the License-in and License-out agreements. See also Creation Date.
Benefits Valuable products or services that are bestowed on an individual as a byproduct of their membership or contractual relationship with a certain program or other entity/institution.
Best Practice Recommendations regarding processes or techniques for the use or implementation of products or services.
Book A series of thoughtful concepts with a natural and physical connection to a titled subject / body-of-knowledge which forms a complete perspective for the purpose of knowledge transfer.
Boolean Search Returns results based on Boolean logic. Boolean searching is used by advanced searchers with specific information needs. Curriculum Repository Search supports the standard Boolean operators and syntax: And (and, &); Or (or, |).
Case Study A written or recorded, detailed analysis of some targeted stress factor(s), for the purpose of noting success or failure to used as a benchmark for education, research, and/or planning.
Child Object Related curriculum items, associated to each other in the database. (for example, a series of labs, modules, and exams roll up to a course). The items are all cataloged separately, and can be downloaded individually, or as a group.
Code (Samples) Small, focused pieces of code that can usually be compiled into an application, but most are less than 3,000 lines in size. Designed to demonstrate and teach a specific technology.
Collective Work Compiled content, from a number of contributions, created as separate and independent works, and then are assembled into a collective whole for distribution and use.
Computer Science Area A specific and distinct area of the Computer Science Body of Knowledge, which makes up the Computing Curricula 2001, with respective sub-units as Computer Science topics, approved by ACM Council and IEEE-CS Board and funded by the National Science Foundation in 2001
Computer Science Unit A specific and distinct unit or topic within an area of the Computer Science Body of Knowledge, which makes up the Computing Curricula 2001, approved by ACM Council and IEEE-CS Board, and funded by the National Science Foundation in 2001.
Conference A meeting/gathering of particular individuals invited to consult with, discuss and/or present information on a particular topic or set of topics in a related field or subject for the purpose of bettering relations and information exchange between the organizations/markets the individuals represent.
Content Type (Object Type) A structured collection of elements that are related to content and curriculum creation, publishing, and management. A content type is distinguished by the breadth or focus of it's subject matter, and is normally independent of format or delivery mechanism.
Copyright The legal right granted to an author, composer, playwright, publisher, or distributor to exclusive publication, production, sale, or distribution of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work.
Course A designated unit of curriculum; titled, and objective-focused segment of educationally significant content made up of modules, lessons, and other subject supporting exercises, focused on the capability level of an audience grouping.
Course Length (Duration) The length of time the course content is meant to consume from orientation through delivery and completion.
Course Overview (Notes) A summary of course and related information that will be useful to others preparing to deliver the content. Should include pointers, references, and books, not linked to course content and other useful advise.
Course Title
Curriculum A designated set of related courses focused on a field of study.
Curriculum Outline A summarized view of the main topics and important points related to a specific set of curriculum on a topic, generally formatted with headings and subheadings.
Data Set A collection of related data records on a computer-readable medium, such as a disk
Date of Creation (Authored or Published Date) The date of authorship or origination where the components of the element are complete, and the element is considered ready for distribution and use.
Derivative Copyrighted as an adaptation of another's work, with their permission, or with some other form of arrangement.
Difficulty Level Similar to target audience, where the level of complexity in a curriculum subject may also be gauged by the level of student audience invited to participate in it's presentation and completion path.
Event Summits, symposia, or conferences with current or potential customer invitees, focusing on content designed to improve sales or customer relations with this or a related audience/market group.
Exam Tests designed to measure progress against the objectives of a lesson, course or field of study. Exams can consist of questions and answers, lab exercises, or both. Questions can be in any form: multiple choice, true-false, essay, or coding problems.
Exercise A unit of activity within a lesson performed for the sake of practice, and to acquire skill and knowledge.
FAQ Questions commonly asked about a subject, and their answers.
File Type The type of electronic container the content was formatted with. May include the technology name, or a neutral description.
Form A fixed or constrained pattern that procedure and or data is controlled by, collected to serve a specific purpose.
How-to Article Highly specific procedures that are beyond the scope of product documentation.
How-to Guide Step-by-step instructions for performing a particular task. Not primarily written as instructions for using a particular product.
Intellectual Property A product of the intellect that has commercial value, including copyrighted property such as literary or artistic works, and ideational property, such as patents, appellations of origin, business methods, and industrial processes.
Journal A published periodical focused on field of study or professional interest, written for a specialized audience and comprised of articles written by those who are expert in the subject.
Keywords A list of significant and descriptive words that will be used to render the content to users in searches. The words should be similar to words found in the ACM Computing Classification System.
Knowledge-base Article Articles documenting new features, conversion issues, setup issues, known error messages, known documentation errors, and so on for recently released products.
Lab An exercise performed with specialized equipment or methods, for the specific purpose of practice, testing, or research activities within field or fields of interest, related to the lesson, module, course or field title.
Lab Manual A reference book of instructions, exercises, and/or lessons to accompany the course content, for use in skill and knowledge-based activities; labs.
Learning Standard Standardized Approaches to Content Development, Itemization, Publication, Assessments, Presentation, Feedback, Transmission and Runtime Packaging. There are various related and unrelated Learning Standards. Name any that apply to the specific piece of content.
Lecture Notes Written or audio restatements of the course or lesson content formally delivered, for the purpose of instruction, by the authority on the topic.
Lesson Segment of a Module and a Course. Any content that is read, recited or otherwise delivered to a learning audience for the purpose of detailed illustration of the objective-focused or educationally significant content which is the subject.
Lesson Plan A writing noting the method of delivery, and the specific goals and timelines associated to the delivery of lesson content.
License Agreement Terms and agreement to upload/download content to/from this site for the purpose of sharing with educational institutions.
Link The specific reference to the URL on the World Wide Web, or elsewhere on the Internet including the Protocol Name, Host Name, and possibly File Name.
Long Description A detailed description of the content and any pertinent information the user will need to use the content. This information will be presented on the site in the detailed view of the record, and will usually depict the main terminology, prerequisites, goals, objectives, and / or file-use information for the user.
Metadata Information 'about' the subject content within the Curriculum Repository: Object Type, Title(s), Date(s), Author Information, Copyright, Use Permissions, Content Description, Abstract, Keywords, Spoken Language, Location, Categorization, and other related items.
Module A measurable breakdown of course content into a planned segment which can stand-alone as a sub-titled content on the related course subject.
News (Items) Articles written and released for publication in the popular press.
Other (Content Type) A content type other than exists in the primary list of catalog content types in the repository.
Paper A written composition intended for presentation.
Periodical A writing published at regular intervals which focuses on a topic or related topics, written by reporters and other credible sources.
Presentation A show or widely appealing assembly of exhibits or other refined and encapsulated content presented by an authority on the topic.
Problem Set(s) Sets of related mathematical questions to be solved or answered together so that the individual answers lend toward the answer to a larger problem to be answered.
Program Update An update to the terms which apply to membership in a program - detailing services, projects, behaviors and fees required of, as well as opportunities and benefits offered to members of the program.
Project An extensive task purposely and collectively undertaken by group or individuals to apply knowledge and skills toward a targeted goal which will result in a product, within a certain timeframe.
Pseudonymous Published and Copyrighted under a fictitious name.
Public Domain The status of publications, products, and processes that are not protected under patent or copyright.
Reference A separate writing used to add breadth, clarification, and be informative support for the course, module, or lesson topic.
Report Detailed accounts of information or statements, which may also include opinions and findings on a particular topic.
Research Study Content derived from a scholarly or scientific investigation and in the pursuit of complete understanding of a topic.
Rights Assignment The assignment of rights controllable by virtue of authorship or ownership. The right granted may be copyright or public domain, or other, and does not conflict with the License-in and License-out agreements also designating as handing requirements for site content.
Second Title An additional or long title applied to the content for further distinction from other works with similar first titles.
Self-study (File Type) The content is intended to be used as a medium of study that relies on one's own self to follow through on learning tasks related to a course, module, lesson or lab medium which are all also self-contained in a unit of medium or as a file type.
Service Automated computer actions or methods which apply forms, rules, logic and/or validation to retrieve or distribute data or other supportive computing logic to content; Web Services.
Short Description A succinct description which will be presented on the site with the content title, and will usually depict the objects most interesting and distinct characteristics.
Simulation A program that imitates a physical process or object by causing a computer to respond mathematically to data and changing conditions as though it were the process or object itself.
Special Offer Description of products or services available for purchase at a discount or with additional value than is offered regularly.
Spoken Language The forms of speech, or the methods of expressing ideas, many times distinct to a particular nation; Speech; Oral / Written Communication.
Story A retelling of events that led to an outcome which is of value to certain audiences.
Study Guide A small written guide created to provide direction, and point out critical information to students.
Subject Title The most appropriate descriptive name or heading used to refer to the content object specifically.
Submitter A person who has the authority to dedicate content to this repository for the purpose of sharing as described in the License-in and License-out Agreements on this site.
Syllabi An outline or a summary of the main points of a text, lecture, or course of study.
Technical White Paper Technical solution overviews with a focus on implementation or deployment.
Technology Focus The trade name for the technology featured in the content. Select names for as many of the prominent technologies as possible.
Textbook A book used in schools or colleges for the formal study of a subject.
Tutorial Something that provides individual instruction through step by step explanations of content and concepts relating to a titled subject.
University Course Number The familiar, and prominent tracking ID associated to the course, by the university that holds the course. Normally found in the course catalog associated to the course tile.
University Science Area The technology area of study the course relates to. Can sometimes be found as part of the course number. (MIS, CS, ECE, EE, etc))
URL (Web link) Internet addresses that locate a specific resource on the World Wide Web or elsewhere on the Internet. Consists of the Internet protocol name; a host name; and optional elements such as a port, directory, and file name.
URL Link to Content URL link on the world-wide web or other internet space, accessible by the public, that the content master is hosted.
Web Cast Customized content that is delivered to users over the Internet and may be updated regularly and automatically. Users can specify the type of content they wish to see, and content providers are able to deliver such information directly to the user’s desktop.
Web Service Programmable XML-based service.
White Paper A short treatise whose purpose is to educate industry customers.
Work Sheet Paper or other medium set aside for preliminary notes or computations.
